I was on a group coaching call recently with my business coach, and she asked us some questions that got me thinking more deeply about how exactly I want to help YOU (and others planning to build a home) with my BEFORE YOU BUILD℠ movement.
I want to share these breakthroughs with you because her questions got me to think about what I do in a way that really helps me to explain to you how I can help you.
My entire mission is to help as many people as possible have an amazing home-build experience and to get amazing home-build results.
And I can’t fulfill this mission IF people don’t know what I do and HOW I can help YOU.
That’s on me … it’s not on anybody else. I’m the one who needs to explain what I do a little more clearly.

Welcome back to the BEFORE YOU BUILD℠ podcast. I’m your host, Carrie Barker (aka, Caroline on Design), and today in episode 71, we’re talking about breakthroughs I had that help me explain how I help people and, more specifically, the BEFORE YOU BUILD℠ movement.
All right, this morning’s group call with my business coach was AMAZING.
Like, so eye-opening to me in that I know how I want to help people, but I don’t know that I do a great job of explaining how I want to help people.
So I’m doing that in this episode.

The Future of ‘Caroline On Design’
Ok, one of her questions was, ‘What movement would I love to create for the people I want to serve?’
In other words, how do I want to help YOU and others who are building their dream homes?
Below are the thoughts that automatically ran through my head …
- I want to help as many people as possible build a house they absolutely LOVE
- I want to help as many people as possible build their dream home within budget … or at least, very close to budget
- I want to help as many people as possible feel CONFIDENT as they make big decisions for their homes… both design decisions and financial decisions
- I want this level of confidence in decision-making to go far beyond their home build (and I’ll talk more about this later in this episode)
- I want to help as many people as possible build a house that is laid out perfectly for THEIR family
- I want to help as many people as possible actually ENJOY the home-build experience
- I want to help as many people as possible have a positive building experience
- I want to help as many people as possible to improve their family life in their home
- I want to help as many people as possible continue to enjoy their current lifestyle because they’re not blowing their budget and then are forced to make financial sacrifices
- I want to change the rhetoric that building a house is hard, it’s stressful, it’s not fun, it’s a horrible experience, it’s hard on a marriage, and so much more, including the thought that it’s impossible to stay on budget
Clearly, I have BIG plans for ‘Caroline On Design’ … which started as a hobby and morphed into a business.
I didn’t set out to start a business. But now that I have it, it is SO clear to me how I can help people. It’s SO clear to me that I am called to help as many people as possible have an amazing home-build experience.
You wanna hear something crazy?!
I never in a million years thought I would start a business.
I never wanted to.
I have a background in Psychology and I didn’t take a single business course in college or grad school.
And yet … I learned how to run an online business … which wasn’t easy, but I did it because I feel compelled to share what I’ve learned through my home build experience because I know it can help others.
I am not an expert in building a house … AT ALL!
That’s what your builder is for. They’re the detail person and the building expert.
BUT I’ve been through the process, and I got the results that everybody wants (a house I absolutely love even 11 years later, it’s perfect for our family … it worked when my girls were little, and it works for us now with two teenage daughters … and the best part … we built our house on budget).
So I feel compelled to help other people do this because I know it’s possible for them.
Also, I just freakin’ LOVE what I do.
I LOVE helping people in this way.
I LOVE helping people have an amazing home build experience with amazing results.
I’ve taken a million business courses online since starting my business.
I’ve googled millions of things so I can figure out how to do whatever it is that I need to figure out how to do.
I’ve done all of this because I want to help people have a positive home build experience like I did.
I know it’s possible for you, and I can show you the way.
Big Picture Planning BEFORE Building a House
I never in a million years thought I would have a business, but here I am because I love helping people see the big picture of their future dream home.
I love walking people through planning for their build.
Again, I’m not an expert in building a house, but I am REALLY good at helping my clients think about their future houses.
How they want it to look.
How they want to feel in it.
How they want their family to live in it … on a daily basis, over the holidays when family comes to town, and just thinking about where they want to sit and visit with friends when they come over for a glass of wine.
I’m really good at big-picture planning.
And I’m really good at walking through my clients’ floor plans while they’re still on paper. I can find little tweaks they can make that will have exponential benefits to how they live in their home.
That’s actually one of my favorite things to do for my clients.
I LOVE going through their floor plans.
When I look at a floor plan drawing, I see so much possibility, and I see family memories being made.
I can see all of that on a piece of paper (well, actually my computer screen).
So, back to that movement that my coach asked me about.
The movement I want to create for my current clients, my future clients, and anyone listening to my podcast or reading my blog posts … the bottom line … I want to help as many people as possible build a house they absolutely LOVE and is perfect for their family … without blowing their budget.
That’s at the root of everything I do.

That’s the bottom line.
That’s my overall mission.
