Hey there! Welcome back to the Before You Build podcast. I’m your host, Carrie Barker—AKA Caroline on Design.

Today’s episode is a little different—it’s totally impromptu. And I kind of love doing these from time to time. I’m sharing three custom basement ideas that I’ve featured recently on Instagram. They’re simple details that made a huge difference in how we use and enjoy our finished basement.

Let’s jump in!

1. Built-In Cooler in the Basement Bar

This first one’s a bit hard to explain without seeing it—so definitely check out the reel on my Instagram (@carolineondesign). But here’s the gist:

In our basement bar (which is really more like an island), we added a built-in cooler right into the countertop. It’s a rectangular cut-out that can be covered with a matching counter insert when not in use. When we’re entertaining, we just remove the cover, add ice, and pop drinks inside. It drains like a sink, but there’s no faucet.

We also added openings on the inside of the island—like what you’d see at a desk—so we can tuck stools under and sit facing our guests. It’s cozy and makes conversation so much easier.

2. Picture Window in the Basement Stairway

This detail brings in so much natural light. If your basement stairs are on an exterior wall, consider adding a large picture window at the stair landing.

It made a huge difference for us. The light comes through the window, down the stairs, and through a glass door at the bottom, which adds even more light to the basement itself. We have a partially above-ground basement with other windows too, but this landing window is one of those “custom touches” that feels both beautiful and functional.

3. Garage-to-Basement Staircase (Game-Changer!)

This is the one I tell everyone to do if you can.

When we built our house, we didn’t finish the basement right away—it wasn’t in the budget. But I knew we’d want to finish it later, so we added a staircase from the garage directly into the basement.

Best. Decision. Ever.

When we did finish the basement, all the contractors went through the garage—no muddy boots in the house, no random strangers walking through my main floor. We were able to close off the basement and control dust. And now? We use that stairway all the time. My husband especially—he’s constantly going back and forth for projects or hanging out with friends down there.

It wasn’t crazy expensive either—maybe $3–4k. But the value it’s added? 100% worth it.

Final Thoughts

If you do just one of these, I’d strongly recommend the garage-to-basement stairs. But honestly, all three details have made our basement more livable, functional, and enjoyable.

Welcome back to the Before You Build podcast. I’m your host Carrie Barker (aka Caroline On Design), and today in episode 85, I’m sharing three custom basement details that I added when I finished my basement. I think you’ll love these details in your home too.

Why Functional Custom Basement Details Matter

Thinking about finishing your basement? If you’re building a custom home—or planning a basement renovation—you’ll want to consider these simple finished basement ideas that go beyond the basics.

These custom basement details don’t just look great—they make your space more functional, livable, and enjoyable for years to come.

1. Built-In Drink Cooler for Basement Bar

Love entertaining? This first idea is both fun and functional.

We created a built-in drink cooler in the middle of our basement island (aka our bar area). It’s essentially a removable section of countertop that reveals a cooler-style cutout. You fill it with ice, add your favorite drinks, and voilà—your guests can grab a cold beverage without ever leaving the bar.

This cooler even drains like a sink (but doesn’t have a faucet), so clean-up is easy. And when it’s not in use, we just place the countertop piece back on and it’s totally seamless.

💡 Bonus detail: We also added desk-style openings on the inside of the island so we can tuck stools underneath and sit across from our guests. It creates a conversational, welcoming layout that’s perfect for hosting.

2. Stair Landing Window for Natural Light

Natural light can be hard to come by in a basement. But here’s one great basement design idea that makes a huge difference: install a large picture window on your basement stair landing.

If your basement staircase runs along an exterior wall, you likely have the option to add a window here—and trust me, it’s worth it.

In our home, this landing window allows light to pour down into the stairwell and through a glass basement door, giving our lower level a much brighter, more open feel.

It’s one of those custom basement features that many people overlook, but once you have it, you’ll never want to go without it again.

🪟 Tip: Always look for places to add windows during your home design process. You can’t go wrong with more natural light!

3. Garage-to-Basement Staircase Access

Of all the custom basement upgrades we made, this is the one I’d call a must-have.

We added a staircase from our garage directly into our basement—and it was worth every penny. It made finishing the basement years later so much easier (no dusty contractors walking through our main living space!), and it continues to be incredibly practical for daily life.

Whether it’s my husband hauling tools or friends heading down to hang out, this staircase is used constantly. It provides privacy, reduces mess, and adds serious functionality to our home’s layout.

Final Thoughts: Your Basement Can Be Functional and Fun

Whether you’re building your home now or finishing your basement down the road, think beyond the basics.

These custom basement details—from clever bar upgrades to thoughtful lighting and private access—make all the difference in how your basement functions.
