Overwhelmed Building a Home? You’re Going to Be Okay!

Feeling overwhelmed building a home — even just thinking about it — is completely normal.

And honestly, I can relate more than ever because I’m hoping to build again in the next year or two.

That’s partly the reason I decided to write this post. But the main reason is because I want to share what I’m learning from my business coach right now … and I promise it is 100% applicable to building a home.

We are in the middle of a deep dive into living in balance — specifically, how to grow a business without letting it take over your entire life.

And as she walks us through each concept, I keep thinking … oh my gosh, this is EXACTLY what my clients go through when they’re building a home.

Whether you’re building a business or building a custom home, the principles are the same.

Life is going to ‘life’.

Chaos is going to show up.

Things are going to feel out of control sometimes.

It’s not a matter of if this is going to happen — it’s when it’s going to happen … and whether you have the tools to navigate the chaos.

Here’s what I want you to know before we go any further … if you’re already feeling overwhelmed just thinking about your build, you are in the right place, you’re not alone, and you’re going to be okay.

Is It Normal to Feel Overwhelmed When Building a Home?

Yes — absolutely, one hundred percent!

You’re Making Hundreds of High-Stakes Decisions

Building a custom home means making hundreds of decisions you’ve never had to make before, and most of them on a timeline that’s largely outside of your control.

Plus, you’re investing a VERY large amount of money into your home.

Of course, that’s overwhelming!

Even just thinking about it before you’ve broken ground is overwhelming.

Feeling Overwhelmed Means Something Big Is Happening

Here’s the reframe I want to offer you … the overwhelm you’re feeling right now isn’t a sign that something is wrong or that you’re not cut out for this.

It’s actually a sign that something really BIG is about to happen in your life.

Why Does Building a Home Feel So Overwhelming?

About a month ago, my business coach said something that really resonated.

She said … ‘the more you try to stay in balance, the more the world will throw imbalance at you’.

And this is SO true.

As soon as I started working on better balance with my work and life schedules, my family had SO much crap thrown at us that was extremely overwhelming.

It was a lot … especially when I was trying to be in balance.

But we got through it, and it made me think … this is EXACTLY what happens during a home build.

Balance Isn’t Something You Achieve — It’s Something You Choose

You decide you’re going to stay calm and organized throughout this process.

You make your lists, do your research, tell yourself you’ve got this.

And then the delays start or you start creeping over budget or your builder calls with not-so-good news, and it starts to feel like everything is falling apart.

Here’s what my coach taught me that changed everything: the goal is not perfect balance.

The goal is to decide to find balance — even in the middle of the chaotic unbalanced moments, when things aren’t going according to plan and life is throwing everything at you at once.

Finding balance during a build is something you have to actively choose, over and over again, in the middle of the chaos.

The Chaos Isn’t the Problem — Feeling Unprepared for It Is

This is the part most people miss. Overwhelm doesn’t actually come from how much is happening during your home build.

It comes from feeling unprepared for what’s happening — from being in constant reaction mode with no roadmap to fall back on.

What Should You Expect When Building a Home?

When it comes to building a home, there are really just two types of overwhelm—and understanding the difference is helpful.

1. The Overwhelm You Can’t Control

Some things are completely outside of your control.

Things like a delayed shipment, a weather setback, a subcontractor running three weeks behind, a family situation that lands right in the middle of your build timeline.

In other words … life ‘lifeing’.

You can’t prevent this kind of overwhelm.

What you can do is decide in advance how you’re going to handle it when it happens.

Having even a loose plan for navigating the curveballs makes them feel a lot less catastrophic when they do show up.

2. The Overwhelm You CAN Prevent

This is the overwhelm that comes from skipping the planning stage and trying to figure everything out as you go … in real time.

It shows up as constant scrambling, reacting, second-guessing every decision, and feeling like you’re always one step behind.

This kind of overwhelm is rooted in feeling underprepared.

The good news is that it’s 100% preventable because it’s within your control.

This is exactly why what you do before you break ground matters so much.

So now that you know what’s coming, here’s how to actually navigate it when it shows up.

How Do You Stay Balanced While Building a Home?

1. Give Yourself Permission to Have Hard Days

Give yourself permission to have hard days or a tough week or even a season where there’s more chaos than calm.

That’s part of building.

It doesn’t mean you made a mistake. It just means you’re in the middle of something hard.

2. One Bad Week Doesn’t Define Your Build

Here’s something I keep coming back to … your home build experience is really just a collection of moments, not any single one.

The goal isn’t a perfect build experience — that doesn’t exist. The goal is that the majority of this process feels manageable.

One bad week doesn’t define your build.

One frustrating conversation with your builder isn’t the whole story.

One budget surprise doesn’t mean the whole thing is falling apart.

If most of your moments are pretty good, you’re winning.

And most of them can be pretty good — if you’ve set yourself up well going in.

3. Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t control your builder’s schedule, lumber prices, or the weather, BUT you can control how prepared you are when you walk into this process.

You can control how clearly you’ve communicated your vision.

You can control whether you’ve done your homework before things get busy — or whether you’re trying to figure it all out under pressure.

Put your energy there … on the things you can control.

What Do You Need to Know Before Building a Home?

Let’s wrap this episode up with a few things I want you to know before building a home.

Knowing these things ahead of time will save you a lot of stress and overwhelm.

Your Builder Won’t Guide You Through the Prep — That’s Your Job

Your builder is an expert at construction. They are not an expert at helping you figure out how you want to live or what your non-negotiables are.

(of course there are some great builders out there that can be helpful with this, but most builders leave this up to you)

It’s up to you to come up with your vision for your home and how your family lives on a daily basis.

Decisions Come Fast Once You Break Ground — Get Clear Before That Happens

Once construction starts, the pace picks up very quickly. Your builder will need answers ASAP, and this is very overwhelming if you aren’t prepared.

The families who feel the calmest mid-build are the ones who did the deep thinking — about their vision, their budget, their priorities — before they ever broke ground.

Budget Surprises Are Normal — But You Can Plan for Them

Almost every build has financial surprises.

The difference between a budget surprise that derails your whole experience and one that’s just a bump in the road is whether you planned for it.

Going into your build with a realistic budget and a contingency cushion is smart.

You Can’t Control Everything — But You CAN Control Your Preparation

Some things are completely outside of your control (e.g. the weather and the supply chain).

However, your level of preparation is 100% within your control.

And it’s the single biggest factor in how your build experience feels from start to finish.

Building a strong foundation BEFORE you build is exactly what allows you to build within budget and without regrets (and with far less overwhelm).

(For the practical, actionable side of all of this, go check out 4 Tips to Reduce Stress While Building a House— it’s the perfect companion to everything we covered here.)
