You Need More Than Google When Building Your Dream Home

You need MORE than just Google when building your dream home.

Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely LOVE Google and couldn’t live without it (TBH).

I use Google ALL. THE. TIME.

And when it comes to building a house, I think ‘How To’ posts are great to gather as much info and knowledge as possible.

However, all the INFO in the world doesn’t make up for a lack of CONFIDENCE in yourself to make the tough decisions to bring your dream home to life.

You need to feel CONFIDENT choosing your builder, understanding your vision for your house, creating a realistic budget (that you can actually stick to), and making all of the design decisions (and there are TONS of decisions).

The bottom line … ‘How To’ posts are great, but you also need *C O N F I D E N C E* when it comes to building your dream home (and that doesn’t come from Google).

You can Google content all day long. You can google how to do absolutely anything. However, when building your dream home, you need one other aspect you cannot get from just googling info.

Hey, welcome back to the Before You Build podcast. I’m your host, Carrie Barker, aka Caroline on design, and today in episode 54, we are talking about why you need more than Google when building your dream home.

I’m not a Google hater. I love it.

I use it multiple times a day. Actually, I’ve probably already used it 15 times this morning, and it’s not even noon. I could not live without Google. But there’s one thing you cannot get from Google that you will need when you’re building your house. So we are going to talk about that in today’s episode.

I Needed More than Google when Building my Business

So I want to start with a little bit of a story. I run an online business, obviously. But here’s a little fun fact. I did not take a single business class in college or graduate school. I went to college and graduate school, not a single business class.

I was a social worker when I graduated from graduate school. So I had no idea how to run a business, let alone an online business that required a website, sending emails to people, gathering email addresses, and all the things. Even posting on Instagram was hard for me at first. So I had to learn absolutely everything.

All the tech, the marketing, the sales, how to set up online carts to sell digital products, which I had to learn how to create the digital products. So I literally started from scratch. I had to learn everything. I did not know how to do any of the tech. I didn’t know how to do sales.

I had never taken a sales class and didn’t know anything. So Google was my best friend. I used Google all the time, and I learned a ton. I’m sure you’re doing that with your home build. You’re probably up late at night googling floor plans and how to find the perfect builder.

So what I want to say is I love Google. I still love it, I could not live without it. But it wasn’t until I started investing in online courses about building my business that I could learn from people who were a few steps ahead of me.

That’s when I really started feeling confident in my ability to bring my dream business to life. So instead of just getting one-off information and advice about a certain aspect of business, I was actually investing in online courses that I could learn step-by-step frameworks about exactly how to do XYZ.

For example, when I needed to learn how to create a checkout page instead of googling it for hours and getting all kinds of conflicting information, I was learning it from someone who was a few steps ahead of me and had already done it and even gave me templates on how to do it.

Also, when I was following someone else’s simple steps to do XYZ for building my business, I was cutting my learning curve time exponentially like big time. So yes, Google is awesome.

And I still Google questions about my business. I mean, like I said I was this morning, I do it all the time. But when it really comes to building my business, I google in tandem with learning from people who are just a few steps ahead of me. And I do that because this is what’s missing when all you’re doing is searching for how to do XYZ.

Investing in Yourself when Building Your Dream Home

This goes for you when you’re building, when you’re learning from someone who’s been there and done that, you’re getting the exact how-to information you need.

But it’s in a buttoned-up framework. It’s all step by step and walks you directly through it. And that’s why I do what I do. I created my Before You Build group coaching program to walk my clients step by step through how to prepare for a successful build. Honestly, I’m having to be really honest.

A lot of the stuff in my program you could probably find if you wanted to Google for days on end. You could find the information somewhere, but you’re not going to find it in the way I put it together in a step-by-step framework that gives you the exact how to information you need, not just how to do things, it’s telling you exactly what you need and what you can forget about.

Not only that, I walk my clients step by step through this framework, which does include the how-to information, but I also give them prompts so they can really apply the how-to information to their knowledge.

When we go to Google, sometimes you don’t always get the most accurate information. You need to be able to sift through it.

I think we all know by now not to Google medical stuff, because all it does is just freak us out. But I’m still guilty of it. I still do it, but it freaks me out every time.

The point is, you have to be careful when you’re getting how-to information or just information, like to diagnose yourself. You have to be careful who you’re listening to.

So I know personally when I am googling about a weird ailment or something like maybe my stomach hurts and I go to Google, it’s going to tell me all these crazy diagnoses that it could be, and I can get that and I have all that information.

But what makes me feel confident in an actual diagnosis is going to my doctor and telling them my symptoms, going through my history with them, maybe going through what I eat, and they can tell me. Or maybe even getting an x-ray, getting some feedback from an x-ray or a CT scan or something so that I can feel confident with the diagnosis that I’m getting.

It is the same thing as building a house, but it is a little bit different. It’s not a health issue, but when you’re getting all this how-to information, you’re getting all this information, and you have it.

But none of that will make you feel confident unless you know how to apply it to your situation.

So yes, you can google how-to’s all day long, really all year long, and get a ton of helpful information and guidance on how to build a house you love. And you can find tips on how to stay on budget, all of that. But none of that matters if you don’t feel confident making the tough decisions.

If you don’t feel confident choosing your builder or creating a realistic budget that you can actually stick to or understanding your vision for your house in crystal clear detail, you’re not going to be able to make those tough decisions.

And there are so many decisions. There are a lot of design finishes, let me tell you. I think you already know that, but there are a lot. And I want you to start with googling things. I want you to start with how to’s or even looking at Instagram or Pinterest.

Doesn’t have to be Google. You can find information wherever you find design inspiration; go there. But remember that none of that matters if you don’t have the confidence in yourself to implement what you’ve learned.

The ‘Before You Build’ Program

That’s why in my BYB group coaching program, one of the primary things aside from the framework that I walk clients step by step through, I also offer personalized feedback to my clients. I offer personalized support.

We have a weekly group coaching call, and sometimes I might only have one person, so it turns into a one-to-one call. We also have a private Facebook group which you can go to and get support and feedback from the group. All of this is helping you implement what you learned.

And by following this framework, you’re getting all the how-to information that you can. I mean, you could find most of it online, but it is in a buttoned-up framework that takes you from step one through step four and will get you the results you want because you’re going to feel confident.

You know you have the right how-to information, and you have the support to get you through it. So, with all that said, I love Google. I don’t want Google to be mad at me. I think it’s amazing. I love Instagram.

I love Google. I love Pinterest. If you haven’t been on Pinterest, go. It’s a search engine. Also, just like Google, you’ll find tons of great information.

But if you want all that information in a buttoned-up framework that will help you and your spouse and your family build a house that’s perfect for you within your budget, I highly encourage you to join us inside BYB. That’s the Before You Build group coaching program and in a couple weeks, there’s going to be a pretty big incentive for you to join.

If you’re thinking about building this year, next year, or even the following year, it will be a good time to join. So I’m just throwing that out there.

I’ll be back to give you more details, but in the meantime, go ahead and Google, but find someone that you can talk to who’s going to help you feel confident implementing what you’re learning when you’re googling how to because you can google eight ways to stay on budget I think that’s the exact title on my podcast and blog, eight ways to stay on budget.

I have a post on that; you can go to that. That’s great. But I’m not walking you through how to create your realistic budget in a blog post. I’m not supporting you to help you figure out how to take what you want and make it work for your budget. That’s something that you get inside the program.
