Are you planning to build a home in 2023 and you’re considering how you want your exterior design to look?

Maybe you still love the white exterior look but aren’t sure if it’s still in style. Or maybe you’re just curious about what the next big thing in exterior design is so that you can be ahead of the curve.

Either way, I think you’re going to love the home exterior trends in 2023.

By the end of this post, you’ll have a better understanding of what is trending in home exterior design in 2023 and, hopefully, a better idea of how you want to design your own dream home :).

Listen on APPLE | STITCHER | SPOTIFY

In this post, we’re covering 7 home exterior design trends that we’re going to see on homes in 2023.

These trends include popular exterior paint colors as well as popular exterior elements that we’ll be seeing this year.

Plus, I’ve included several popular exterior paint color ideas for you to get started. You can find these lists below.

REMINDER … THIS IS YOUR HOME!

Quick reminder … this is YOUR home!

It doesn’t matter if a design element or a paint color that you love is trending …  go with your gut when designing your home and always choose what YOU love.

Don’t worry about what the current ‘trends’ happen to be :).

Let’s start with a quick list of the seven exterior design trends that really caught my eye for 2023. I’ll go into more depth with each trend below.

  1. Creamy White Paint Colors
  2. Earth Tones + Dark Paint Colors
  3. Mixing Textures
  4. Wood Accents
  5. Copper Gutters + Downspouts
  6. Metal Roofs
  7. Monochromatic Color Schemes

EXTERIOR COLORS FOR HOMES 2023

What are the popular house exterior colors for 2023? Let’s talk about it because the first two trends are all about paint colors …

TREND 1: CREAMY WHITE PAINT COLORS

Painted brick and white siding aren’t going anywhere in 2023 (yay!). However, the bright, stark whites that have been popular over the past several years will be replaced with softer, warmer whites and painted brick will take the place of simple white farmhouse siding.

Don’t worry … if your budget is tight, you can mix lower-cost siding with some painted brick to fit into your budget. It just so happens that mixing exterior materials is also a big trend in 2023.

TREND 2: EARTHY TONES + DARK PAINT COLORS

While soft white home exteriors will remain popular in 2023, the complete opposite will also be very popular … dark, rich, moody exteriors (i.e. deep charcoal paint colors).

In my opinion, fully dark exteriors (i.e. all-over charcoal or black paint) are a little *much*.

However, there is a happy medium that we’ll continue to see in 2023 … color blocking.

Color-blocking allows you to experiment with deep, moody charcoal colors (on one or more section(s) of your white house) without committing to painting your entire house a dark color.

Other popular color palettes are (luckily) rooted in timeless and classic design. These palettes include earth-toned soft neutrals, greens, and blues that blend seamlessly into nature.

I’ve included a list of popular dark paint colors as well as earth-tone paint colors below :).

TREND 3: MIXING TEXTURES

One of the biggest trends (yet always timeless) is adding natural textures to your home exterior.

Using a mix of different textures (e.g. stone, siding, and wood) on your home exterior creates depth, adds visual interest, and adds that overall WOW factor to the front of your home.

TREND 4: WOOD ACCENTS

We’ve seen this trend on the rise in recent years and it is still going strong. Adding wood elements (or accents) to your home exterior adds overall warmth and depth.

Wood accents can be in the form of wood headers over your windows, wood posts on your front porch, or wood shutters, and you can even incorporate a full gable of natural wood shake if you like this look.

TREND 5: COPPER GUTTERS + DOWNSPOUTS

Copper is another popular material we’ve seen in recent years and it will continue to dominate in 2023.

Simply adding copper accents such as copper gutters and downspouts really adds a ‘WOW’ factor to any home exterior.

However, do keep in mind that adding just a little bit of copper goes a long way. So you don’t need to go overboard :).

TREND 6: METAL ROOFS

Oh my goodness, I LOVE this trend … and, honestly, I don’t consider it necessarily a trend. I built my home ten years ago and included metal roof accents above my front porch and over the garage windows.

I loved this look in 2013 when I built my home and I still love it today.

The trendy piece of this puzzle would be a full metal roof on your entire home. A full metal roof is gorgeous but might not have as much longevity design-wise as a metal roof accent such as your front porch overhang.

TREND 7: MONOCHROMATIC COLOR SCHEME

In the past few years, we’ve seen a lot of high-contrast looks such as color blocking and black windows on white siding.

While both of these trends remain very popular, there is a completely opposite look rising in popularity in 2023 … and that is monochromatic color palettes.

A monochromatic color scheme comes down to basically choosing your siding, trim, and shutter colors from various shades on the same paint strip.

You can either go simple and neutral with a creamy white or light neutral monochromatic scheme or you can create this look with a dark, rich color scheme.

Both options are equally gorgeous!
