Home Exterior Trends 2022

Are you planning to build a home in 2022 and you’re considering how you want to design the exterior of your home? Maybe you still love the white exterior look but aren’t sure if it’s still in style? Or maybe you’re just curious what the next big thing in exterior design is so that you can be ahead of the curve? Either way, I think you’re going to love the home exterior trends in 2022.

In this blog post, we’ll cover the popular exterior color palettes as well as the exterior materials and elements that we’ll see on homes in 2022. Plus, I’ve listed several popular exterior paint color ideas for you.

By the end of this post, you’ll have a better understanding of what is trending in home exterior design this year and, hopefully, a better idea of how you want to design your own dream home :).

Home Exterior Design Trends 2022

I scoured the design websites to get an idea of what exterior design trends we’ll see in 2022. I am LOVING (most of) the exterior trends for 2022! (I kinda wish I was building a home this year.)

As always, there are many trends that are classic and timeless while other trends don’t seem as likely to stand the test of time (e.g. painting your entire house black).

I would never recommend trends that you’ll want to rip out and start over by the time you finish building or remodeling your home. That is NOT what I want for you. So we’ll just focus on the trends that ensure your curb appeal is current yet remains timeless at the same time.

And always remember this is YOUR HOME! It doesn’t matter if a design element or paint color is trending …  go with your gut when designing your home and always choose what YOU love. It doesn’t matter what the current ‘trends’ are :).

Black and white color palettes aren’t going anywhere in 2022 (yay!). However, bright whites will be replaced with softer, warmer whites and painted brick will take the place of simple white farmhouse siding. Don’t worry … if your budget is tight, you can mix lower-cost siding with some painted brick to fit into your budget. It just so happens that mixing exterior materials is also a big trend in 2022.

While soft white home exteriors will remain popular in 2022, the complete opposite will also be very popular … dark, rich, moody exteriors (i.e. deep charcoal paint colors).

In my opinion, fully dark exteriors (i.e. all-over charcoal or black paint) is a little *much*. However, there is a happy medium that we’ll see a lot of in 2022 … color blocking.

This happens to be one of my favorite trends! Color-blocking allows you to experiment with deep, moody charcoal colors (on one or more section(s) of your white house) without committing to painting your entire house a dark color. I, personally, love this trend so you’ll see photos of color-blocked sprinkled throughout this blog post.

Another option (if you’re nervous to commit to a full section of dark paint) is to paint your shutters or front door a deep, rich color while keeping a soft white exterior base.

Other popular color palettes are (luckily) rooted in timeless and classic design. These palettes include soft neutrals, greens, and blues that blend seamlessly into nature.

One of the biggest trends (yet always timeless) is adding natural textures to your home exterior. The most common textures are wood trim and other wood elements as well as stone or brick accents. All of these natural elements add texture and depth to your curb appeal … especially if you have an all-white or all-black home

Other (classic) trends include metal roof accents (e.g. metal roof over the front porch), dark gutters that contrast with white home exteriors, and lots of bronze and copper elements (e.g. gutters, metal roofs, etc.).

There is one little snafu (unfortunately) with this years’ trend of natural elements and copper accents. These aren’t the cheapest exterior materials available. Stone, brick, copper, metal, and natural wood aren’t exactly budget-friendly.

However, there are ways to create this look on a lower budget. You can choose vinyl siding and faux stone for starters. I recommend that you talk to your builder about material options that will help you achieve the look you want within your budget.

Listed below are several popular paint colors to get you started on your color search. I recommend that you order peel and stick samples of any paint colors you’re interested in. These samples are an inexpensive (and mess-free) way to test out paint colors.

  1. Jess says:

Thanks Carrie! We are toggling back and forth between white and something blue, and you’ve given us some specific colors to spend more time exploring! Can’t wait to see what you have coming in kitchen trends!

  2. Amla says:

These are all so beautiful, is the farmhouse exterior going out this year?

  3. rachel frampton says:

My home’s exterior looks a bit dull, and that is why I’m thinking of having it repainted by a painter. Anyhow, I would keep in mind to opt for neutral colors. I also agree with you that it will be impractical to give in to trends. https://www.jpspainting.org/services

  4. Kim says:

What do you think about bronze windows vs white in siding?

    • Are you asking about bronze windows with white siding? I’m confused :). Or are you asking about my thoughts on bronze vs white windows? Please clarify and I’ll answer your question! – Carrie

  5. Shelly Nowotarski says:

Hi Carrie! I am in PA and we are in the process of designing and building a custom home. We are planning a modern farmhouse style as we have a small horse farm so it works perfectly! With a soft white board and batten exterior, and probably some light colored stone, what are your thoughts on bronze vs black windows?

    • Hi Shelly! Your future modern farmhouse on a small horse farm sounds amazing! I honestly don’t think you can go wrong either way … with bronze or black. I feel like bronze is really close to black but just a little softer and not quite as harsh as black windows. However, I think both options look gorgeous! Good luck! – Carrie

  6. Isobel Dibble says:

Hi Carrie, we have decided to update our 1960s home. Currently it has beige siding on the top half and red brick below. It has a moss green metal roof (not our choice!)
We are putting in new black windows and front door. What colors would you suggest to repaint the whole home, taking into account the green roof!
